What is tennis elbow?

Tennis elbow causes pain on the outside of the elbow. It is usually caused by overuse of the forearm muscles, not just by playing tennis. Activities like typing, using tools, or any repetitive arm motion can cause it. It often gets better on its own but can take months.

When NHS resources suggest seeing a GP

  • Pain is not improving after 2 weeks of rest
  • Pain is very severe or affecting your daily activities
  • Your arm or hand feels numb or weak
  • You have had tennis elbow for several months

  • Apply ice wrapped in a towel
  • Use a forearm strap or brace
  • Do gentle stretching and strengthening exercises

Common questions

How long does tennis elbow last?

Tennis elbow can last from a few weeks to over a year. Most cases improve within 6-12 months with rest and exercises. Continuing the aggravating activity will delay recovery.

What is the best exercise for tennis elbow?

Eccentric wrist extension exercises are commonly recommended. Slowly lower a light weight with your palm facing down, then use the other hand to lift it back up. Repeat 10-15 times, 3 times daily.
